Project meeting and first Knowledge Exchange visit, to Parchi in Movemento: Transforming Parks into Open-Air Gyms
In May 2025, the project team traveled to Verona to explore “Parchi in Movimento” (Parks in Movement), a community initiative that brings free physical activity to local parks. Run by local sports associations alongside the city municipality and health authorities, this program turns everyday green spaces into vibrant, open-air gyms during the warmer months.
Observations
- Something for Everyone: From gentle morning stretches and walking groups for seniors to yoga, dance, and even parkour, the activities cater to all ages and fitness levels.
- Breaking Down Barriers: Because the sessions are completely free and hosted in public parks, financial and geographical barriers are removed, making it incredibly easy for anyone to join.
- Community and Support: The initiative thrives on strong teamwork between local government, health sectors, and sports clubs, with high-level backing from the Mayor.
Summary
Verona proves that with strong local backing and smart use of public spaces, a city can easily bring fitness directly to its citizens, building a healthier, more connected community.
